ASTP-Proton is excited to welcome you to our beautiful home town of Leiden for the Social Sciences Arts and Humanities Knowledge Transfer training which we are delivering alongside our partners, Auril/Praxis-Unico.
Leiden is an extraordinarily beautiful city, small enough to explore during a short visit and home to the Netherlands’ oldest university. In 1575, following the siege of Leiden by the Spanish, William of Orange offered the citizens a choice of gifts: an exemption from tax for ten years or a university. Thankfully the wise people picked the university which now boasts 13 Nobel prize winners and has hosted scientifically influential guest such as Albert Einstein, Marie Curie and Niels Bohr. Leiden is also home to one of Europe’s biggest Life Sciences clusters.
Situated only 15 minutes from Amsterdam International Airport, Schiphol, Leiden is conveniently located in the heart of the Randstad megalopolis, and 12km from the coast – if you fancy a bracing walk by the North Sea.
In Leiden’s historic city centre, ringed by canals, you can still see many buildings dating from the 15th and 16th centuries, and older, including the residence of William Brewster who sought sanctuary in the city before boarding the Mayflower for America. If you like culture with your learning, then you will love visiting Leiden; the birthplace of Rembrandt and home to 13 museums, including the National Museum of Antiquities.
Leiden is a small city bursting with things to do and learn, that’s why it is known as the Kennisstad: City of Knowledge.
