Creativity during Covid-19

Creativity in the Covid-19 Crisis – share your stories!

Tom Flanagan, Director of Enterprise & Commercialisation, UCD

What gets you up in the morning? I love that as KT professionals, we have a unique opportunity to be there at the birth of new inventions, to be the first-in-the-world to see them and shape them to solve urgent “hair-on-fire” real-world problems. And we are also good at bringing together the right people and the right financial resources to develop these inventions so that they make it to market despite the odds. There’s a lot of creativity in this and it is great fun when it works!

I’ve been very impressed lately by the creativity of the community we support in answering the call for solutions to all sorts of problems created by the current Covid-19 pandemic.   Here are a couple of hero examples that have come to my attention.

  • University of Liege – Zentech, a spin-off company of the University of Liege, has developed a blood testing kit confirming within 15 minutes if a person has been infected by the corona virus.
  • University of Copenhagen – AdaptVac, a joint-venture between ExpreS2ion Biotech and University of Copenhagen spin-out NextGen Vaccines is developing a vaccine against Covid-19 and other infectious diseases.
  • And my own University College Dublin – With gyms and training facilities closed in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, UCD Spin-out Output Sports is helping athletes and coaches to optimise their remote training and coaching programmes with its Output // Capture technology. Also, UCD based regulatory technology company Corylitics, has launched a new solution to help financial institutions navigate the Covid-19 emergency.

We would like to hear what you and your University partners and spin-outs are doing.  Email your hero stories in less than 50 words (with a link to the longer story if you like) to and we will share them with the rest of our community and the world.

It will be exciting to learn what we are all doing to contribute to resolving this pandemic and it may create new ways for us to collaborate, to bring to market new diagnostics, new therapeutics, new solutions for working from home, new solutions for living through crisis etc, that will help us through this pandemic and prepare us even better for the next!
