Amsterdam just won the title of Europe’s capital of innovation. On 8 April 2016, the European Commission awarded the title of European Capital of Innovation (“iCapital”) 2016 to Amsterdam for its holistic vision of innovation related to four areas of urban life: governance, economics, social inclusion, and quality of life. The prize is valued at €950,000, to be used on further boosting innovation. Amsterdam was recognized for its good start-up climate and its sharing economy, as well as the way city officials approach innovation issues. Amsterdam first appointed a chief technology officer in 2014 to help coordinate citywide innovation projects, and its Smart City initiative is an ambitious plan to reinvent public services.
ASTP-Proton held its latest Fall Meeting in Amsterdam in November 2015, in a networking event that gathered more than a hundred knowledge transfer professionals, hosted by the Dutch National Tech Transfer Association, DTTP, which has certainly its share of responsibility in making Amsterdam Europe’s innovation capital for 2016!
